Here at Safe Training Services, we often get asked about IPAF and its importance in the powered access industry. Let’s dive into what IPAF is and why it’s crucial for professionals working with mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). In this article we will specifically look at IPAF Training Categories
What is IPAF and Why is it Important?
IPAF stands for the International Powered Access Federation. It’s a not-for-profit organisation that promotes the safe and effective use of powered access equipment worldwide. IPAF is crucial because it sets industry standards and provides comprehensive training programmes for those working with MEWPs.
IPAF Training Categories
IPAF divides its training into three main IPAF Training categories: static, mobile, and specialist. Let’s explore each of these in detail.
Static Categories
There are two static categories:
- Category 1a: This covers static vertical platforms, like scissor lifts that remain stationary during use.
- Category 1b: This includes static boom platforms, such as truck-mounted platforms or spider lifts. These machines use outriggers or stabilisers and can’t be moved while the platform is elevated.
Mobile Categories
The mobile categories are:
- Category 3a: This covers mobile vertical platforms, typically self-propelled scissor lifts that can be driven while elevated.
- Category 3b: This includes mobile boom platforms, often called cherry pickers, which can also be driven while the platform is raised.
Specialist Categories
In addition to the main categories, IPAF offers specialist training for:
- PAV (Push Around Vertical) for manually moved vertical lifts
- MCWP for mast climbing work platforms
- Harness use
- Loading and unloading
- MEWPs for managers
